What to do
- Wipe it down every couple of nights with a soft, dry cloth. Most of the dullness on a ring is just skin oil and hand cream — it lifts off easily.
- Wash it once a fortnight in warm soapy water, with a soft toothbrush. Mild dish soap, no chemicals. Pat dry with a lint-free cloth — paper towels can scratch.
- Take it off before strenuous work. Gardening, climbing, gym lifting, heavy lifting at work — anything that puts the band under sideways pressure or risks impact with metal or stone.
- Get it checked yearly. Post it back to us once a year for a free inspection — we check every prong, polish the band, and re-tighten anything that’s loosened. Most of the prong failures we see were preventable at the six-month mark.
What to avoid
- Bleach, chlorine, and pool chemicals. These pit gold and degrade the prong-tip fineness over years. Take it off before swimming and before cleaning.
- Acetone-based nail polish remover. It’s safe on gold but it crazes some of the modern epoxies used for inset accent stones. Belt and braces, take it off.
- Hand sanitiser, sunscreen, and perfume. Won’t damage the ring, but they build up under stones and dull the brilliance fast. Wipe down nightly.
- Storing it next to other rings. Diamond is harder than gold — diamonds scratch the band of every ring they touch. The wooden box your ring arrived in has a velvet pocket. Use that.
If a stone feels loose, stop wearing the ring. A loose prong is the most fixable issue in the world if you catch it early — and the most heartbreaking if you don’t. Post it back to us straight away, free of charge.
Professional cleaning
